The final nine players of the €800 Mega Poker Series Malta Main Event took their seats at 14:00 local time and it took almost 12 hours to determine a winner at the Casino Portomaso. Sami Pulliainen was leading the finalists but the Finn and local resident ultimately had to settle for third place before Roman Valerstein and Antonio Intravaia agreed on a deal.
Both players took €30,000 each and continued to battle for an extra €5,000 as well as the €800 MPS Main Event ticket courtesy of the Concord Group via the “Poker mit Herz” last longer competition. Ultimately it was the American who emerged victorious after his held up versus despite a huge sweat with three spades on the board.
It all started with the elimination of Marcin Barwinski in hand number four of the final table after the player from Poland three-bet shoved with pocket eights and ran into the pocket kings of Dennis Frankenberger. Barwinski’s countryman and William Hill Poker online qualifier Tomasz Olszewski was crippled in a hand against Intravaia and then ran with into the pocket aces of Jarkko Hyttinen.
The Italian also doubled through Dennis Frankenberger and the German never recovered from that, bowing out in 7th place when his nut flush draw didn’t hit. Lukasz Owczarz was the last of the Polish trio among the finalists and finished in 6th place, losing a flip to Valerstein after previously being left short due to a move against Pulliainen.
Two-times World Series of Poker bracelet winner Michael Gathy had an unfortunate day on the live stream table and his middle pair on the flop failed to improve against Valerstein’s top pair to send the Belgian to the rail in 5th place. Fellow short stack Jarkko Hyttinen was out of the tournament shortly after in 4th place before the three-handed play turned into a grind.
By then, Valerstein dominated the action and established a decent lead before making a somewhat loose call against Pulliainen. This seemed to turn things around, but the American regained the top spot after flopping two pair and faded the nut flush draw of the Casino Portomaso regular. It was the start-of-the-day chip leader who fell in 3rd place: Pulliainen first ran into the aces of Intravaia and hit the rail shortly after. Less than half an hour later, the winner was crowned after a very aggressive heads-up duel.
